State media say a landslide triggered by heavy rains has killed 35 people in a mountainous village in northwestern China.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the landslide engulfed the village in the region of Xinjiang's Kashgar prefecture on Wednesday morning.

The brief dispatch did not explain why reports of the landslide came out only on Thursday night, though it said the village is located 170 kilometers (100 miles) from the seat of the nearest county, Kargilik.

It said heavy rains caused serious damage to parts of the area's highways.

Xinhua said rescue efforts were under way.
