Dogs rescued after shelter destroyed by Hurricane Irene.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Dozens of dogs rescued from an animal shelter in the Caribbean are heading to new homes in South Florida.

Nhu Beteta adopted a puppy Wednesday for her new home. "I've never had a dog before, and we are going to get a house, and I want a dog," said Beteta.

A truck full of dogs arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday afternoon to the Humane Society of Broward County after Hurricane Irene struck the shelter and parts of its roof was blown off. "We have been able to check all the dogs that arrived from Puerto Rico," said Humane Society spokes person Cherie Wachter. "They received the necessary vaccinations. The dogs have been tested for heart worm, and we are happy to say that they are available for adoption now."

The Martinez family came to the shelter Wednesday to look for another partner for their Chihuahua. "We heard about it by the news that there were dogs from Puerto Rico, and we thought it would be the best time to come and look," said Jennifer Martinez.

"They are so sweet. I mean there's nothing sweeter than a puppy. They are the ones that love you forever," said Kara Norton.

Margaret Mendez adopted a puppy named Dixie, and she can't wait to take her home tomorrow. "She's going to get spade, and I can take her home tomorrow. I can't wait. She's beautiful," said Mendez.

Dozens of other dogs are still up for adoption. Every Wednesday, through October, there will be half-price adoptions at the Humane Society of Broward. They are open until 9 p.m.
