Doctors: Transplant of ex-German FM's kidney to his wife successful

BERLIN (AP) — Doctors say operations to take a kidney from Germany's main opposition leader and transplant it to his wife have been successful.

Hannes Schwarz, a spokesman for Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Social Democratic Party, told the news agency DAPD on Wednesday that doctors carried out the surgeries without any problems.

Steinmeier announced Monday that he was taking off a few weeks from politics to donate a kidney to his wife, Elke Buedenbender.
