MUNICH – John Demjanjuk's defense attorney says his client cannot read documents the court gives him to examine and needs further medical assessment.
Attorney Ulrich Busch requested Tuesday that his 90-year-old client be examined by an orthopedist and an optometrist, saying he was in too much pain and his eyesight too bad for him to examine documents being submitted as evidence.
Demjanjuk is standing trial on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder for allegedly having been a guard at the Nazi's Sobibor death camp. He denies the charges.
Presiding Judge Ralph Alt took the motion under advisement but noted the court does not insist Demjanjuk read the documents.
Prosecutor Hans-Joachim Lutz said Demjanjuk seems to read a Ukrainian newspaper regularly without a problem.
