CARACAS, Venezuela – The death toll from a mass overdose at a Venezuelan prison in November has risen to 48.
Officials announced on Thursday that 48 people have died from taking a toxic cocktail of stolen pharmaceuticals. That's up from 35 confirmed deaths.
Prison authorities say a group of violent inmates raided the infirmary of the prison in western Venezuela in late November. They say the prisoners guzzled down a deadly mix of pure alcohol with drugs used to treat diabetes, epilepsy and high blood pressure.
Families and human rights groups have questioned the story. On Thursday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights urged the Venezuelan government to pursue further investigation.
