Denmark's defense minister, Carl Holst, resigned Tuesday after admitting using a political aide whose salary was paid by taxpayers to help with his parliamentary election campaign in June.

In the past months, Holst had failed to give clear answers about whether he had used Christian Ingemann Nielsen, his press counselor at Region of Southern Denmark, during the campaign ahead of the June 18 elections.

Holst, a 45-year-old former local politician, eventually admitted it.

In Denmark, political aides cannot help lawmakers during election campaigns.

Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen was expected to name Holst's replacement on Wednesday.
