A Croatian man has been kidnapped in Egypt by an unidentified armed group, Croatia's foreign ministry said Friday.

The man was abducted Wednesday in Cairo while traveling to work for a French company, the foreign ministry said in a statement. It did not name the company. The statement said an armed group stopped the company car, forced the man out and drove away.

The man was identified only by his initials T.S. , born in 1984. The foreign ministry said it has contacted the man's family and Egyptian authorities.

No other details were released.

An Egyptian security official said the abducted man is a petroleum engineer working for a multinational company. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media, said gunmen stopped the man's car on a highway west of Cairo and took him away.

The car, its driver and the man's belongings were left behind, the official said. He added that a police investigation is underway.
