Thirteen students have drowned swimming in the sea while on a picnic at a beach in India.

They failed to anticipate the sudden tide and were dragged into the water at Murud beach in Maharashtra's Raigard district on Monday, a senior officer told The Indian Express.

The victims - 10 women and three men - were all aged between 19 and 23, said Arvind Patil, an assistant inspector.

They were part of a group of 155 pupils from the computer science department of the Abeda Inamdar College in Pune.

Officers, aided by other beachgoers, recovered some of the bodies during an ongoing search and rescue operation.

The beach is situated around 90 miles south of Mumbai, on the country's west coast.
