Authorities in Macedonia have ordered a Christmas Day rerun of a parliamentary election in one voting district — a decision that could threaten the slim majority of the long-governing conservatives.

In an announcement Wednesday, the state election commission called the repeat of the Dec. 11 vote in a district in northwestern Macedonia, following complaints about voting irregularities from the main opposition Social Democrats.

Former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's conservative VMRO-DPMNE party won 51 seats in the 120-member parliament, while the Social Democrats claimed 49 — leaving both needing a coalition partner to form a government.

The two parties have been at loggerheads for months.
