The Ghana Immigration Service says a Chinese national has died after being picked up during a raid on illegal gold mines in the Ashanti region.

Public affairs officer Francis Palm-Deti said Monday that 95 Chinese nationals were arrested last month because they were engaged in illegal gold mining activities. He said six were released on bail.

Palm-Deti would not give the age of the deceased male but said, "he was among a number of Chinese who were picked up during a raid on illegal gold mines in the Amansie West area."

He said the Chinese nationals in detention are "being treated well, with Chinese officials in the country paying them visits."

Ghana's foreign minister says the Chinese ambassador to Ghana reported the Chinese national who died was 16 years old.
