A Chinese retiree from a local prosecuting office in central China has stood trial for killing one student and injuring another 11 by ramming a car into them.

The Nanyang Intermediate People's Court said Monday that Ma Gaochao, 60, was charged with endangering public safety and that it would announce a verdict at a later date.

The court says Ma, a former employee of the Nanyang prosecuting office, was upset over his failure to collect debts from a real estate developer and that he decided to draw public attention by creating a major crash.

It says Ma rammed a car into a crowd of students when a local middle school had a midday break on Feb. 29, killing one student immediately and injuring 11 others.
