BEIJING – Several hundred hospital workers in eastern China have gathered outside their facility to stage a rare protest against attacks on medical workers. The demonstration came after a patient stabbed three of their doctors, killing one.
Wearing white coats and surgical masks, the staffers assembled Monday outside the Wenling City No. 1 People's Hospital with signs that said "uphold justice" and "guarantee medical staffers' safety."
Wenling police say on their official microblog that a knife-wielding patient who was being treated in the emergency department on Friday stabbed the three. One of them died.
Attacks on hospital staff by patients have becoming increasingly common in China, where overcrowded facilities and medical corruption fuel frustration that sometimes boils over into violence.
