The more than 2,000 members of China's top political advisory body have convened their annual meeting to put forward proposals for the national congress.

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, opened the session in Beijing on Tuesday, two days before the National People's Congress is set to begin.

Advisory members hail from China's various walks of life and ethnic groups, as well as from token political parties in addition to the ruling Communist Party, because the conference is ostensibly a venue for voices from the full spectrum of Chinese society.

Their proposals are considered a rough barometer of public opinion, although they lack political clout under China's one-party rule.

Celebrities including movie superstar Jackie Chan and former NBA player Yao Ming serve on the panel.
