The parents of a man executed for murder and rape and then posthumously exonerated 18 years later have watched as a court in northern China convicted and sentenced another man for those crimes.

Hohhot Intermediate People's Court in Inner Mongolia says it convicted Zhao Zhihong of rape and murder and sentenced him to death on Monday.

The charge included the 1996 rape and murder of a woman in a public toilet, according to media reports. An 18-year-old man called Huugjilt was executed for the crime soon afterward, and exonerated only in December.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the parents of Huugjilt were in the court Monday.

The court says Zhao also received prison sentences and fines for separate crimes of robbery and theft.
