State media say the boss of a battery plant in eastern China has been detained after more than 300 people were sickened by lead pollution.

The official Xinhua News Agency says 99 children were among those with elevated levels of lead in their blood and that 53 people were hospitalized.

It says the plant's boss was detained Monday and eight local officials were being investigated over lax supervision after authorities discovered the Zhejiang Haijiu Battery Co. improperly disposed of lead waste.

The plant is located in Deqing, a rural area west of Shanghai.
