SANTIAGO, Chile – A Chilean commission is recommending that the latest population census be scrapped and repeated.
Six outside experts who evaluated the 2012 census announced Wednesday that they found "serious problems" and said it shouldn't be used to calculate official numbers.
Experts said that 9.3 percent of the population was not included in the census. Chile's reputation for its solid official statistics has been hit by questions surrounding the gathering of the census data.
The government had boasted that the census was the most comprehensive in the country's history.
It reported 15.8 million people. The commission said it should be closer to 17.4 million.
