PARIS – French lawmakers are getting ready to discuss an immigration bill aimed at significantly changing the procedures for seeking asylum.
The bill by French President Emmanuel Macron's government proposes to speed up the processing of asylum applications and to grant new rights to successful applicants, but also to make it easier to deport people whose applications are denied.
The French parliament was set to start debating the proposal on Monday night. The discussion is expected to last through Friday.
The leftist opposition and rights groups oppose the legislation, saying it would make it harder for asylum-seekers to stay in the country.
Among the most disputed measures, the government wants to keep asylum-seekers longer in detention centers and to reduce the time allowed for appealing deportation decisions.
