OTTAWA – Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has named eight new ministers, including four women, in his biggest cabinet shuffle since taking office in 2006.
The shake-up appears to be aimed at presenting a fresh face for his government ahead of an important speech and federal elections in 2015, after an expenses scandal dented the Conservative government's popularity.
Harper announced the new positions Monday via his official Twitter account in advance of a formal announcement later in the day.
Shelly Glover comes aboard as heritage minister, replacing James Moore, who becomes industry minister. Michelle Rempel has been named minister of state for western economic diversification.
Rona Ambrose, previously minister of public works, has been appointed minister of health, while Pierre Poilievre becomes minister of state for democratic reform. Julian Fantino becomes minister of veteran's affairs.
Kellie Leitch is taking on the labor portfolio, while Kerry-Lynne Findlay becomes minister of national revenue.
