RYE, England -- A bus driver who was caught short en route to a town in southeastern England got locked in a public bathroom for two hours -- while her passengers sat waiting for her to return.
Carol Warne, 49, stopped her vehicle in the southern town of Rye to take a comfort break on her way to dropping off passengers in Folkestone, around 25 miles away.
However, when she tried to leave the bathroom she found the doors had been locked for the evening by a council worker, the Folkestone Herald reported.
"I often pop to the loo there on my way home and there are no signs up warning what time it closes," Warne told the paper. "No one called out to ask if someone was in there, the gate was just locked."
Luckily, she had her cell phone with her and was able to contact Rother District Council to raise the alarm.
"Unfortunately, the only person who could come let me out lived in Polegate, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, so I was in for a wait," she added.
An hour later, the council sent a replacement vehicle to rescue her confused passengers and Warne was freed after two hours locked in the facilities.
A spokeswoman for the council apologized for the incident last week.
"We will be launching a full investigation into what went wrong," she added.
