Brunei veteran journalist Stephen dies at 75

Ignatius Stephen, a top Bruneian journalist who reported from the oil-rich sultanate on Borneo island for about 50 years, has died. He was 75.

Stephen's news website says he died hours after sustaining head injuries from a fall at his home in Brunei's capital on Thursday.

Stephen gained respect for covering pivotal events in Brunei's history since the early 1960s.

The website, which Stephen established, said Friday that he revealed details about a rare political rebellion against Brunei's sultan in 1962 that shaped the country's future.

Stephen spent most of his career with the Borneo Bulletin newspaper and also wrote for international news organizations including The Associated Press.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters.
