SAO PAULO – Brazil's long-ailing vice president has undergone another surgery to remove a tumor causing intestinal bleeding.
Doctors say they were not able to remove the tumor from Jose Alencar. He is listed as in intensive care and on a breathing machine.
The Sirio-Libanes Hospital said in a statement late Wednesday that he was in critical — but stable — condition.
The 79-year-old Alencar has fought abdominal cancer since 1997.
One of the attending doctors told reporters that Alencar is passing through his most difficult moment.
But Raul Cutait added that the situation is not "out of control."
Details on what immediate treatment options remained for Alencar were not given.
