Doctors say Brazil's vice president has successfully undergone surgery for an intestinal blockage and hemorrhage.

The Sirio-Libanes Hospital says in a statement that Jose Alencar is in stable condition after Saturday's operation.

The statement says the blockage was caused by tumors which were removed, as was part of his small intestine.

The statement provides no further details.

The 79-year-old Alencar has fought abdominal cancer since 1997.
