A Bosnian court has sentenced seven people to a total of more than 12 years in jail for joining the Islamic State group in Syria and for illegally owning weapons.

The court said Monday that the seven were found guilty of joining IS between 2013 and 2014. The sentences ranged from one year to three years.

More than 150 people have left Bosnia for Syria to fight in various groups the United Nations has branded as terror organizations. Intelligence agencies say the number of people leaving Bosnia to fight in Syria or Iraq has dropped significantly since authorities introduced jail terms two years ago for those who fight in foreign wars.

Of the 130 Bosnian citizens who had previously left, nearly 50 reportedly died in battles.
