An Egyptian security official says a bomb struck an armored police vehicle in the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, killing an officer and wounding four conscripts.

He says the explosion early Wednesday destroyed the vehicle in el-Arish, the main city of northern Sinai, where attacks targeting security forces have spiked since the military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which refers to itself as the Sinai Province of the Islamic State, regularly claims large-scale assaults in the Sinai and last month released a video showing attacks on soldiers that killed several of them.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief journalists.
