DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The body of a U.S. Navy sailor believed to have fallen overboard while on patrol in the Gulf of Oman was recovered Wednesday during a search and rescue operation.
The sailor was reported missing from the destroyer USS Halsey on Tuesday evening after failing to report for watch duty.
Lt. Frederick Martin of the Bahrain-based U.S. 5th Fleet said Wednesday helicopters from three warships and P-3 maritime patrol planes were involved in the two-day search.
The sailor’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and the incident is now under investigation.
The USS Halsey is deployed to the 5th Fleet and conducts maritime security operations.
