MANAMA, Bahrain – Bahraini authorities say the country's leading human rights activist will be questioned by a military prosecutor as part of the Gulf nation's growing crackdown against opposition.
The state-run Bahrain News Agency says Nabeel Rajab is accused of tampering with photos of a man who died in custody last week.
Rajab, the head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, claims the detainee was fatally beaten and posted a photo that purports to show the body covered with bruises and gashes. Authorities claim the detainee, Ali Isa Sager, died after struggling with guards. A government photo shows few signs of injuries.
The action Monday is part of a widening clampdown in Bahrain after declaring martial law to quell an anti-government uprising.
