Bahrain's Interior Ministry has detained a former Shiite opposition lawmaker on charges related to financing terrorism and involvement in a bombing that killed two policemen last month.

The ministry announced the arrest of the lawmaker late Sunday, saying in a statement that he was detained last Tuesday at Bahrain International Airport upon returning from a visit to Iran. The statement did not identify the lawmaker.

The opposition group al-Wefaq says the former lawmaker under arrest is Hasan Isa, a prominent Bahraini cleric. Al-Wefaq said in a statement that Isa's lawyers were not allowed to see him or sit in on his interrogation.

The Interior Ministry statement says the suspect distributed money he'd raised during rallies to wanted fugitives and a "terrorist group," without providing further details.
