NASSAU, Bahamas – More than 150 illegal Haitian migrants have been detained in the Bahamas after a smuggler's sloop ran aground during Tropical Storm Isaac's trek across the region, officials said Sunday.
The islands' National Emergency Management Agency said the boat ran aground Saturday just off Andros Island as Isaac churned southwest of the Bahamas.
Immigration Director Jack Thompson said 152 Haitians have been detained but the exact number of people on board has not been established. Migrants have told investigators that there were at least 170 people aboard the sloop.
Authorities plan to search for possible bodies in the area, but the seas have been too rough for boats to leave port.
The migrants are reported to be in good health but exhausted from their journey. They reportedly left Cap Haitien in northern Haiti a week ago.
Many Haitians have migrated to the Bahamas in recent years to work low-wage jobs or to try to get to the United States. In June, 11 Haitians died when their boat capsized off the Bahamian island of Abaco.
