Peruvian authorities are searching for 40 construction workers more than two days after they were abducted by Shining Path rebels.

The abducted workers are employees of Skanska of Sweden and the Peruvian company Ransa. They were seized early Monday in the small town of Kepashiato in the municipality of Convencion.

Convencion Mayor Fedia Castro says security forces are searching by air and land for the hostages and their captors. She says the search hasn't turned up any sign of them.

Officials say the rebels have demanded $10 million in ransom.

Skanska spokesman Edvard Lind said Wednesday that the company is cooperating with Peruvian authorities.
