Austria checking possible links of suspect to Mumbai attack
VIENNA – Austrian prosecutors say they are following up on the possibility that a Pakistani citizen detained last year is linked to the 2008 attack in Mumbai.
A statement from the prosecutor's office in Salzburg says that while media reports saying the man has been identified as a suspect cannot be confirmed, "leads pointing toward this are being looked into."
Tuesday's statement specifically said that reported links to the Lashkar-e-Taiba "cannot be confirmed." The Pakistan-based militant group is blamed for the Mumbai attack, which killed 166 people.
The suspect was arrested in Austria in December along with an Algerian citizen. Officials say they apparently were on the same boat bringing migrants to Greece as two men involved in the Paris attacks that killed 130 people on Nov. 13.
