PARIS – Heavy rains and strong winds have destroyed homes and left at least three people dead — including two children — in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia.
President Francois Hollande said in a statement Tuesday that five people remain missing after flooding and landslides since Sunday.
Local television reported that floods hit hardest around the town of Houailou. Images of the damage showed corrugated roofs torn off homes, uprooted trees and riverbanks overflowing on the island territory.
Low-lying islands in the South Pacific are especially concerned about an increase in extreme weather attributed to man-made global warming.
