Arizona voters approved a bill that essentially bans affirmative action.

The measure, known as Proposition 107, prohibits preferential treatment by state and local government based on race, ethnicity and sex.

Opponents of the measure argued that affirmative action programs are crucial to helping minorities and others who face disproportionate underrepresentation.

Supporters of Proposition 107 maintained that such programs would not cease to exist as long as they were available to everyone.
