New York – A woman who accused soldiers loyal to Libyan despot Muammar Qaddafi of raping her has arrived in the U.S.
Eman al Obaidi flew into New York late Wednesday after spending 54 days at a UN refugee center in Timisoara, Romania. She then boarded a flight to her final destination, where she will make her home, CNN reported Friday.
Her case attracted international media attention when she stormed into the Rixos hotel in Tripoli on March 26 and threw open her coat to show scars and bruises on her body, which she claimed were proof of her ordeal.
She accused forces loyal to Qaddafi of abusing her after she was stopped at a checkpoint in Tripoli.
A State Department spokesman previously said the U.S. was following the case very closely and would "make sure that she finds appropriate asylum."
Obaidi told CNN she was excited and happy to be in the U.S. and thanked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who she hopes to meet someday.
