PARIS – Air France is increasing security checks of some baggage and conducting an internal investigation into how 1.4 metric tons of cocaine were smuggled from Venezuela to Paris in three dozen suitcases.
The cocaine was seized this month at Charles de Gaulle Airport in one of France's biggest-ever drug busts.
The Paris prosecutor's office said Monday that six people are in custody in the case, which involves police in several countries. Britain's government says three Britons have been detained.
Venezuela's interior minister said two National Guard sergeants and one lieutenant were also arrested, and that airline workers were suspected of involvement.
Air France said in a statement that it is working with police and conducting an internal investigation, and increasing baggage checks at some "sensitive" locations.
