Irish police say nine people, including an infant, have died in a fire at a mobile home camp for Ireland's native Gypsies.

Detectives say they have yet to establish a cause for Saturday's fire at a Dublin housing site for Irish Gypsies, who in Ireland are known as "travelers."

Among the dead are members of two families who lived in neighboring mobile homes at the site in the Dublin Mountain foothills.

Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman Gerry Stanley said the fire started in one home and spread to the second. He said some of the dead could not be removed yet because the fire was too intense.

The death toll is the worst from a blaze in Ireland since Valentine's Day 1981, when 48 people died in a Dublin dance hall.
