A fight among inmates at a prison in northern Mexico injured eight prisoners one day before Pope Francis is scheduled to visit another Mexican prison on the U.S. border.

The Tamaulipas state police say the inmate fight broke out Tuesday at the prison in Ciudad Victoria, the state capital. The state Public Safety Department said the situation had been brought under control by police and soldiers. Eight inmates suffered injuries from blows.

Francis is scheduled to visit a state prison Wednesday in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas.

Mexico's prisons are frequently overcrowded, and cell blocks are often controlled by the inmates.

A prison riot last week in the northern city of Monterrey killed 49 inmates.
