Police in the southern Mexico state of Guerrero say they have found six bodies after a reported shootout near the violence-plagued city of Chilapa.

The Guerrero state government said late Wednesday that soldiers and police entered the area and with a helicopter's help found six bodies and three other people wounded in the clash.

Inhabitants of the remote rural town where the deaths occurred said there had been a confrontation between groups of armed men.

The area has been the scene of bloody turf battles between the Rojos gang and their rivals the Ardillos.
