WARSAW, Poland – Five finalists have been picked in a competition for a memorial in Warsaw to those Poles who risked their lives to save Jews during World War II.

An organization representing the rescued Jews on Wednesday announced the finalists, who had been chosen from dozens of submissions. The winner will be announced in April.

The memorial is planned to be built in the heart of the former Warsaw Ghetto and in front of a new museum that celebrates 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland, called the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

About 3 million Polish Jews were killed in the Holocaust. The Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem has honored about 6,500 Poles who saved Jews, but there are more whose identities are not known.
