469 people arrested in PR on variety of charges

Police in Puerto Rico have arrested 469 people in a sweep across the U.S. territory that targeted people accused of crimes ranging from murder to traffic violations.

A Thursday statement from Police Chief Jose Figueroa Sancha says the operation aimed to restore peace and order on a Caribbean island that recorded its second-worst year for homicides in 2010.

He says the arrests were made over 36 hours by 450 police officers.

It is unclear what prompted the operation.

Sancha is scheduled to meet Friday with the island's justice secretary to kick off a week honoring the police department.
