Nigerian police say members of a radical Muslim sect have killed two police officers in the country's troubled northeast.

Borno State police chief Mohammed Abubakar said Wednesday that three gunmen shot dead Santal Ali, 43, at his home in the city of Maiduguri on Tuesday night.

He said another police killing was reported at a church in the same area about an hour later. He did not give details on the second attack.

Police blame a radical sect locally known as Boko Haram for the deaths, the latest in a rash of targeted killings that have left dozens of police officers and soldiers dead.

The group whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language has previously attacked churches and engineered a massive prison break.
