2 human rights groups criticize UN over refugees

UNITED NATIONS – Two prominent human rights groups say the planned outcome document for next week's United Nations summit on refugees falls short of what is needed to deal with the massive crisis.

In separate statements issued Tuesday, Human Rights Watch called the final statement "a missed opportunity and Amnesty International accused member states of stripping away any proposals of substance.

Leaders from around the world will meet in New York on Monday to discuss the issue. On Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama will host a "Leader's Summit," in hopes of raising money for refugee initiatives.

"The U.N. summit has been sabotaged by states acting in self-interest, leaving millions of refugees in dire situations around the world on the edge of a precipice," says Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International.
