A French military spokesman says two medical aid workers were injured when their vehicle hit a land mine in the northern Mali city of Kidal.

Remi Libessart said by phone from Kidal Wednesday that the incident occurred near the airfield. The two victims, both Malian, are working for the aid group Medecins du Monde, or Doctors of the World.

A humanitarian worker based in Kidal, who insisted on anonymity for security reasons, said the group's Kidal coordinator sustained serious injuries to his hand.

Libessart said both workers were being treated at Kidal's hospital.

More than one year after France intervened to scatter al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists from northern Mali, the region remains insecure. Earlier this month, a Red Cross vehicle went missing in a kidnapping later claimed by Islamic extremists.
