A local government in southwest China says 14 workers trapped when part of a railway tunnel collapsed two days ago are alive and safe in the wreckage.

The collapse happened Monday afternoon on a tunnel being constructed to link Yunnan province with neighboring Guangxi region.

The Funing county government said Wednesday that 14 were confirmed to be alive but one other trapped worker remained out of contact.

Rescuers managed to drill a hole in the collapsed tunnel on Tuesday evening and sent food, water and flashlights to those trapped.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
