An Indian police official says gunmen disguised as Indian soldiers opened fire on a car in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing a passenger and triggering a firefight with army troops.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He says at least three gunmen fired on a vehicle early Friday in the Dayalchak area, some 340 kilometers (210 miles) south of Srinagar. Three other passengers have been wounded.

The assailants sped away in the car, but army troops intercepted them about 30 kilometers (18 miles) away. The ensuing gunbattle lasted for at least three hours.

It's not immediately clear who is behind the attack.
