Ten of the nation's top young experts on maps, borders, culture and history will be competing for the title of National Geographic Bee champion.

The final rounds of the annual competition will be held Wednesday morning in Washington. The bee is taped for broadcast on National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.

The bee has a game show format, with quirky scoring and unpredictable questions. Repeat finalists are rare, but 11-year-old Kapil Nathan of Hoover, Alabama, made the finals for the second straight year. The field was narrowed from 54 state-level champions during Monday's preliminary rounds.

The winner gets a $50,000 scholarship, a trip to Alaska and Glacier Bay National Park and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.
