Two men convicted of trying to smuggle dozens of firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition to the notorious Zetas drug cartel in Mexico have been handed prison sentences.

Damaso Alberto Rueda-Cabrera of El Cenizo, Texas, and Rene Chapa of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, had pleaded guilty in Laredo to weapons charges. U.S. District Judge George Kazen sentenced Rueda-Cabrera to almost seven years in prison. Chapa was sentenced to almost six years in federal prison.

Court documents show Chapa recruited an undercover federal agent posing as a truck driver to carry arms and ammo from Phoenix to Laredo and into Mexico. The weapons were delivered to the agent in Phoenix, who carried the shipment to Laredo. There, Rueda-Cabrera met the agent with the intention of receiving the weapons.
