A man was taken into custody after a woman and her daughter were shot outside a private school in Rockdale County Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The woman had just driven up to Little Mountain Christian Academy to drop off her daughter around 6:30 a.m. when gunshots rang out, law officers said.

"She heard gunshots and realized she'd been shot and realized her daughter had been shot and ran inside for help," Rockdale County sheriff's Sgt. Jodi Shupe told the Rockdale Citizen.

The woman was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center, authorities said. Her 10-year-old daughter was at Children's Healthcare at Egleston. There was no immediate information on their conditions.

A man was taken into custody in Newton County in connection with the shootings, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Details of the arrest were not immediately available.

Shupe said the woman had driven up to the school to drop off her daughter as she did most mornings. The 10-year-old would then take a bus from there to Lorraine Elementary School, she said.

Little Mountain Christian Academy has a Stockbridge address and is 20 miles southeast of Atlanta, in Rockdale County's southwest corner.
