Venezuelan illegal immigrant killed by FBI agent in Chicago was caught and released under Biden: sources

Oscar D Corrales was caught and released at the southern border during the Biden administration in 2023, sources say

A Venezuelan illegal immigrant shot and killed by an off-duty FBI agent in Chicago Monday night had previously been caught and released at the southern border during the Biden administration, multiple federal law enforcement sources told Fox News.

The FBI confirmed Tuesday that the agent was driving home alone in a Bureau-issued vehicle when he encountered the armed man firing at a group of people. The bureau said the agent intervened to stop the threat and that the shooting is now under internal review.

The man, identified by federal sources as 27-year-old Oscar D. Corrales, was firing a gun toward people in a homeless encampment when the off-duty FBI agent encountered him, according to the sources.

The agent was driving alone when he spotted Corrales shooting toward the encampment, sources said. The agent got out of his car and shot and killed Corrales.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the FBI said the shooting occurred around 5:30pm Monday near West 18th Street and South Union Avenue in Chicago. The bureau said the agent witnessed the individual fire at least two shots toward a group of people.

The FBI said no agents were injured and no additional injuries were reported.

Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News Corrales was apprehended at the southern border in October 2023 and subsequently released into the United States during the Biden administration.

The FBI independently confirmed Corrales' immigration history in its statement Tuesday, saying the bureau learned after the shooting that the deceased individual was an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who had been taken into custody at the border in 2023 and subsequently released during the prior administration.

Corrales also had a previous arrest in California, where he was released from custody despite an ICE detainer, according to the sources.

The circumstances of that arrest, including the charges Corrales faced and which California jurisdiction released him, were not immediately available.

Sources emphasized that the deadly encounter in Chicago was not connected to an immigration enforcement operation. The FBI agent was off duty when he encountered Corrales, and the shooting was described as an unrelated incident.

The FBI said the shooting is being reviewed by its Inspection Division in accordance with bureau policy governing agent-involved shootings.

The bureau said it does not anticipate releasing additional information while the investigation remains ongoing.

The Chicago Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital that officers responded to a shooting involving federal agents in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue. The department said its Investigative Response Team was on site to document the incident and referred additional questions to the FBI's Chicago field office.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office provided Fox News Digital with a record identifying Corrales as a 27-year-old man under case number 5735.
