US officials, Albuquerque expected to release mandated reforms after harsh use-of-force report

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The U.S. Department of Justice and New Mexico's largest city are expected to make an announcement about reforms into the troubled Albuquerque police force.

City and federal officials have been in talks about mandated changes to the police agency following a harsh Justice Department report that faulted officers for their use of force.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has scheduled a press conference Friday with Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta and Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry about the Police Department, but no details have been released.

The March shooting of a homeless man who authorities later said was struggling with mental illness helped spark widespread calls for reform and protests throughout the city. The FBI is investigating the case.

Albuquerque police have been under scrutiny for more than 40 police shootings since 2010.
