MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents has approved a resolution affirming the system's commitment to free speech.
Universities around the country have been approving similar resolutions in the face of protests over racial tensions and other social issues.
The demonstrations have fed concerns that schools might sacrifice free speech in order to address student grievances. Civil liberties supporters also are worried about the use of "trigger warnings" to alert students about uncomfortable course content and some campus groups have canceled appearances by speakers with contentious views.
The regents approved the resolution 16-2 Friday. Regent Charles Pruitt voted against the resolution, saying he didn't think it had been fully vetted. Regent Jose Vasquez, who also voted no, says people can express themselves fully on campus now.
